Padilla and Thayer in new dance work

Now this sounds intriguing. Deborah Jinza Thayer, who creates theatrical, movement-based performances that investigate space (her company is Movement Architecture), is celebrating Twin Cities art icon Douglas Padilla with two weekends of work. Titled “Dougieland 60 in Seven Dances,” the performances are both a tribute to and a collaboration with Padilla, who’s turning 60 years of age this year.

The performers include some Twin Cities regulars, including Christine Maginnis (a long-time powerhouse with Zenon Dance Company), Stephanie Karr Smith (who ignites the stage when she dances with Ballet of the Dolls), and up and comers Rosy Simas, Rachel Barnes and Debra McGee.

“Dougieland 60 in Seven Dances,” 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday; 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18-20, 25-27; California Gallery, 2205 California Street NE, Minneapolis. $13-$25. 612-245-2253.
