Without a doubt, one of the most entertaining, enlightening and memorable events last fall was the Minnesota Shubert Center’s daylong hip-hop event, culminating in a breaker battle. More than 1,000 audience members and crews crowded into the parking lot between the Hennepin Center for the Arts and the Shubert Theater for a day of lively competition, conversations about the role of hip-hop in American culture, and just hangin’ out enjoyin’ the vibe. Tremendous fun.
So they’re doing it again, on Saturday. This year’s family- and community-oriented event includes dancers from around the country competing for more than $5,000 in prizes. DJ Nikoless will keep the music going, with help from such local luminaries as Carnage, Desdemona, Dancin’ Dave. Last year’s Breaker Battle winner, Motion Disorderz from Milwaukee, also performs.
The 2nd Annual Shubert Groundbreaker Battle. Saturday, 1 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Free. Parking lot between Hennepin Center for the Arts and the Shubert Theater, 528 Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis.
