Ever since I discovered Maya Deren’s “A Study in Choreography for Camera,” featuring the resplendent Talley Beatty, I’ve been a fan of choreography created for film. This weekend, Cinema Revolution, whose mission is to “invigorate film culture in Minnesota,” and the adventurous presenter Intermedia Arts hold another showing of new choreographic cinematic expressions submitted to their Dance Film Project.
This year’s presentation, a curated public screening of work by emerging and established local filmmakers, includes some fascinating possibilities. For example, months ago a call went out for anyone to participate in Vanessa Voskuil and Ryan Philippi’s “Haven.” Debra Jinza Thayer, who has her own company, Movement Architecture, and illustrator Jeff Henneman have created a film titled “Today as We Know It.” Rachel Perlmeter, of Macalester College’s dance program and a Ballet Russes scholar, has made “Glass Chapel Dance (for Les Noces).”
Each program includes 11 short films, so undoubtedly there will be plenty to ponder when the lights come up.
