The lauded musical version of “Billy Elliot” will land at the Orpheum Theatre in December for a three-week run as part of the annual Hennepin Theatre Trust’s Broadway series.
The musical, featuring music by Elton John and a book and lyrics by Lee Hall, is based on the 2000 film of the same name (featuring a script by Hall). The musical opened on London’s West End in 2005 and became a smash hit. It later moved to Broadway, where it would receive 10 Tony Awards, including best musical.
Set against the backdrop of the miners’ strike of the 1980s in Britain, “Billy Elliot” follows the title character, a young boy who discovers hope amid the strife in a ballet class.
The show, running Dec. 16 to Jan. 9, has been announced as a “sneak peak” for the full 2010-2011 Broadway series. Tickets will go on sale in April as part of a season package. Single tickets will go on sale at a later date. For more information, check online.
