Local theaters team up for ‘The Awakening’

Theaters 3AM Productions and Savage Umbrella will team up for an adaptation of Kate Chopin‘s groundbreaking “The Awakening,” opening Friday at the Gremlin Theatre in St. Paul.

Chopin’s novel, which stirred controversy and was banned when first published, explores the life of Edna,  a woman living in 1890s New Orleans.

As she experiences her “awakening,” Edna begins to rattle her societal cage and strikes off in her own direction. The adaptation was created by director Laura Leffler-McCabe and the cast of 25 performers. Original music was composed by Candy Bilyk. The cast features Sara Teich as Edna.

“The Awakening” runs April 2-17 at the Gremlin Theatre, 2400 University Ave., St. Paul. Tickets are $12-$18 on a sliding scale. For more information and tickets, call 612-339-0207 or visit online.
