Free jazz outdoors, all summer long

Who doesn’t love free music? Each summer, we’re lavished with live, outdoor, bring-a-lawn-chair, bring-the-kids music in parks and other public places throughout the Twin Cities. Thank you, Parks and Rec people, cities, sponsors, businesses, festival planners and hosts. Following are this summer’s jazz offerings by location and date.

EDINA
Centennial Lakes Park. 7499 France Ave. S., Maetzold Amphitheater (outdoors). In case of rain, concerts will be moved indoors to Edinborough Park (7700 York Ave. S.). All concerts start at 7 p.m.

Thursday-Sunday, June 17-18: 12th Annual Twin Cities Jazz Festival. St. Paul’s Lowertown, mostly Mears Park. This is the big one. Watch for a festival guide in MinnPost the week of June 14.

Saturday, July 17, 10 a.m.-10 p.m.: DakotaFest. Nicollet Mall between 10th and 11th; Peavey Plaza. The Dakota celebrates its 25th Anniversary year with a block party. I’ll post more as I learn it, but for now we’re expecting live music on two stages, food from local restaurants, activities for kids (including an “instrument petting zoo” staffed by the MacPhail Center for Music), and beverages provided by Summit Brewery.

Saturday, August 7, 1 p.m.-7 p.m.: Freedom Jazz Festival. Minnehaha Park, Minneapolis. No further information at this time.

Sunday, August 8, 12 p.m.-4:45 p.m.: Bloomington Jazz Festival, Normandale Lake Bandshell, 84th and Chalet Road, Bloomington. 12 p.m.: Southside Aces. 1:15 p.m.: Steve Clarke and the Working Stiffs. 2:45 p.m.: JazzMN Big Band.
