The groundswell of interest in mid-century modernism continues in the Twin Cities tonight with the launch of a new architectural history and preservation group: DOCOMOMO, the Minnesota chapter.
The cute if unwieldy acronym stands for the DOcumentation and COnservation of buildings and sites neighborhoods of the MOdern MOvement. The international interdisciplinary group, which includes 53 chapters and more than 2,300 members throughout the world, is a watchdog for threatened modernist architecture; an information exchange for ideas having to do with technology, conservation, history and education related to modern design; and engages members in responsible advocacy for the conservation of the world’s mid-century modern heritage.
The kick-off event, called a “Mod Mixer,” will introduce the chapter, reveal its progress and detail upcoming events while mid-mod aficionados meet and greet.
“Mod Mixer” 6-8 p.m., Thursday, June 24, Design Within Reach, Minneapolis. Free.
