TU Dance has made some significant moves lately, and they’re not choreographic. The company, co-founded by Uri Sands and Toni Pierce-Sands, recently moved into new studio space in the Midway area of St. Paul. Last week, the company was already rehearsing in the former warehouse with heat, familiarity and a sense of being home.
This weekend, at O’Shaughnessy, the company premieres the new works they were powering through: Sands’ “The Amusement of the Gods,” which explores worship rituals; “Long Way Back,” in which he reflects losing and regaining one’s way; and a third work still untitled.
The company has also hired its first managing director: Julie Sand. She was managing director of the Jungle Theater from 1998-2004, and has recently been consulting with nonprofit organizations.
Look for TU Dance to announce a studio open house sometime this spring, after offices and dressing rooms are built out and the space is tidied up. Shea, one of the Twin Cities’ premier brand and design firms (from graphic design to architectural design), is working on the studio.
Meanwhile, this weekend’s performances — TU Dance’s seventh season — offer a look at this fast-growing and gracious company with a loyal following. To learn more, check out this video from MN Original last year.
