This is a first.

The winner of this month’s literary prize drawing, chosen randomly from our current list of 133 registered clubs, is the Gentleman’s Book Club.

Yes, an all-male book club. Ten men who meet in Minneapolis or Minnetonka six times a year. Mostly, but not always, they read contemporary fiction.

Recent reads: “The Master Butchers Singing Club” by Louise Erdrich. “People of the Book” by Geraldine Brooks. “Team of Rivals” by Doris Kearns Goodwin. “Unaccustomed Earth” by Jhumpa Lahiri. “Lush Life” by Richard Price.

Two club members — U of M professors Richard Beach and Steve Yussen — are interested in the differences between all-male and all-female book clubs. (Richard’s a professor of English Education; Steve’s a professor at the Institute of Child Development.) They presented an academic paper earlier this month at the National Reading Conference, and think their research “may have implications for enhancing the quality of book club discussions.”

What did they win? Ten vouchers to Park Square Theatre. Gentlemen, enjoy.
