Looking for a one-of-a-kind holiday gift — and a great way to support MinnPost?

Best-selling writer Julie Kramer — author of “Stalking Susan,” “Missing Mark” and “Silencing Sam” — will name a character in her fourth novel after novel after you or someone special on your gift list. The book, as yet unnamed, is due for release next summer.

Julie, who’s married to MinnPost journalist Joe Kimball, made a similar offer a year ago when she was writing “Silencing Sam.” Jennifer Turrentine was the high bidder in 2009, and presented the character naming as a holiday gift to her good friend Larry Moore.

The Larry Moore character in “Silencing Sam”is a sheriff’s deputy, canine cop with a bomb sniffing dog who helps investigate the bombings of wind turbines in southern Minnesota.

We checked in with Jennifer and Larry to ask how the character naming worked out.

Jennifer: “It’s the best gift I’ve ever given and the joy on Larry’s face, when I told him about his name being in Julie’s next book, was priceless.”

Larry: “It’s the most extraordinary, creative gift ever.”

If you want to make a run at being this year’s winner, email your bid to lkramer [at] minnpost [dot] com by 3 p.m. this Thursday, Dec. 2. Minimum bid is $100.

The winner will be notified Thursday evening. In the event of a tie, the bid received first will be the winner. Please note that your bid is a legal commitment to buy if you are the highest bidder.

Julie’s critically acclaimed series is set in the desperate world of local television news. Her work has won the Minnesota Book Award and the RT Book Reviews’ Choice for Best First Mystery. She’s also been nominated for the Anthony, Barry, Shamus, Mary Higgins Clark, and Daphne du Maurier Awards.

One warning: She writes thrillers and there is no guarantee your character won’t kill — or be killed.

Let the bidding begin.
