Looking to meet local authors, improve your writing skills, or find the next great read for your book club?

Avid readers and aspiring writers should be sure to check out the Bloomington Theatre and Art Center’s ninth annual Writers’ Festival and Book Fair on March 24.

The day-long event brings together local readers, authors, editors, publishers, agents and marketing experts for speeches, workshops and panels addressing all facets of writing and publishing.

Topics to be covered include writing poetry, plays and personal essays; crafting short memoirs; aspects of the screenplay; children’s book illustration; strategic book marketing; finding an agent; e-book design basics; creating an author website; online tools for novel research; public speaking; and the future of literary publishing.

The keynote speaker is comedian, actor and Hollywood screenwriter Pat Proft, whose screenwriting credits include the “Naked Gun,” “Hot Shots,” and “Scary Movie” series; “Police Academy” and “Bachelor Party” — spoofs filled with slapstick and rapid-fire dialogue.

Other notable authors and presenters at this year’s festival include poet (and MinnPost writer) Marge Barrett, novelist Mark Munger, playwright Cynthia Holm, fiction writer Ethan Rutherford, journalist Linda C. Anderson and illustrator Marilyn Brown.

With entertaining author presentations, helpful workshops by industry insiders, book selling and signing, and opportunities to chat one-on-one with local published authors, book enthusiasts and writers alike are sure to find what they’re looking for at the Writer’s Festival and Book Fair.

Festival schedule:

“This Writer’s Life” keynote speech – 9:30-10:30 a.m. 
Book fair featuring 80 authors and vendors – 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Rapid readings by presenting authors – 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Panel and workshop sessions – 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. 

The book fair and 10-minute rapid readings are free and open to the public. Workshops, panels and the keynote address cost $12 (pre-registration is required).
