Suffer now, Al fans: Norm’s recount margin soars to 590

Boom! Just like that, Norm wipes away Al’s Thursday gains; as of 4:15 p.m., the margin is back up to 590 — the biggest it’s been since Wednesday morning.

As the roller coaster heaves …

Update: MPR’s Bob Collins notes 1,500 votes were removed in this latest update. It’s only the second time since Election Night the vote total has moved downward.

This margin is still well within the margin of error of the voting process.
What’s scary (particularly for Norm Coleman) is the the error rate for human vote counting (1-4%) is higher than that for electronic scanning. This means that we are likely to have a shift of tens of thousands of votes in either direction — not because errors have been corrected, but simply because of the variability in the process.
We need a better way to do it!
