NoDak chain: We don’t want Strib or PiPress

In a Wednesday column musing about who might buy the Strib and consolidate it with the Pioneer Press, I floated the name of Forum Communications, the Fargo-based chain that owns several Minnesota dailies and weeklies.

Today, Forum CEO William C. Marcil tells his own paper no dice. “We are not interested in buying the Minneapolis Star Tribune or St. Paul Pioneer Press, period.”

As originally noted, Forum is a pretty conservative company; Marcil says he was flattered to be mentioned among the possibilities, and notes Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar asked him about the buy-and-merge possibility during an editorial board meeting Wednesday.

I worked at the Star Tribune for 18 years and left in 1994 to complete a Ph.D. in Leadership and Organizational Change and to work as an independent consultant.

I consulted with Forum Communications from 1994-2000 and worked with Bill Marcil and his publishers and directors to formulate their corporate values and purpose as well as with leadership development in the Forum’s Circulation Department.

Bill Marcil is way too smart to get involved with the Star Tribune. He impressed me as a very smart man, a natural entrepreneur with an eye for talent and a nose for good properties.
