Citizen journalist alert: training opportunity

Just to show that they’re not too fixated on the “professional” part of their moniker, the Society of Professional Journalists will host a “Citizen Journalism Academy” Saturday, June 13.

The $40 all-day session includes:

♦ Ethics advice from University of St. Thomas journalism professor Wendy Wyatt
♦ Media-law basics from Faegre & Benson lawyer Leita Walker
♦ Freedom of Information strategy from the local expert on the subject, Don Gemberling
♦ Technology insights from a to-be-named pro
♦ Reporting/writing basics

The weak link here is that I’ve been tapped to do the reporting/writing session, but hopefully the faculty’s overall chops will carry the day.

The session is being held at the Star Tribune, which has no small amount of irony, but good for them for helping out.

As a relatively new SPJ member, one reason I joined is that the organization seem serious about helping and including citizen journalists, so hopefully we’ll have a good turnout.

Too bad it’s so far away……ensures that many/most who would like to be there, can’t be.

Could we do one on the West Coast or online?

That would include a lot more who are interested.

Quick suggestion: ‘hopefully’ as used in the middle graf is incorrect; it is an adverb.

The weak link here is that I’ve been tapped to do the reporting/writing session, but it is my hope that the faculty’s overall chops will carry the day.

I couldn’t resist, seeing as I learned that rule from Dr. Wyatt…

This is great news. But please also alert your readers that they can receive citizen journalism training from the Twin Cities Media Alliance for free. For details, go to

Well if you’re going to be teaching a session Mr.Brauer, I’m signing up for sure. As members, do we get a discount? 🙂 just thought I’d throw that out there for my brothers and sisters already in the SPJ and for any of you contemplating joining.

Props to the SPJ for standing with us on the fight for Capitol access.

Just wondering…has Van Pilsum signed up yet?
But enough already – back to revitalizing my compost pile; the one in the garden that is.
