Just to show that they’re not too fixated on the “professional” part of their moniker, the Society of Professional Journalists will host a “Citizen Journalism Academy” Saturday, June 13.
The $40 all-day session includes:
♦ Ethics advice from University of St. Thomas journalism professor Wendy Wyatt
♦ Media-law basics from Faegre & Benson lawyer Leita Walker
♦ Freedom of Information strategy from the local expert on the subject, Don Gemberling
♦ Technology insights from a to-be-named pro
♦ Reporting/writing basics
The weak link here is that I’ve been tapped to do the reporting/writing session, but hopefully the faculty’s overall chops will carry the day.
The session is being held at the Star Tribune, which has no small amount of irony, but good for them for helping out.
As a relatively new SPJ member, one reason I joined is that the organization seem serious about helping and including citizen journalists, so hopefully we’ll have a good turnout.
