Pioneer Press momblog tries to beat Christopher Buckley

It’s the Daily Juggle versus the Daily Beast.

The 2009 Online Journalism Award finalists are in, and the only local hopeful is the Pioneer Press’ momblog, “The Daily Juggle.”

In the Online Commentary/Blogging, Medium Site category, the PiPress moms will have to beat out, of all people, Christopher Buckley — nominated for his very different brand of “Daily Beast” blogging — and a BNET business blog.

It’s a feather in the PiPress’ cap as traditional media organizations try to reinvent themselves, though the Juggle appears to be quite the juggle at the moment. As of Aug. 31, there hasn’t been a blog post for nearly four weeks. Perhaps that’s appropriate, in its way.

PiPressers Molly Millett, Allison Kaplan, Maja Beckstrom and other j-moms get the kudos, and the home site,, is edited by Heidi Raschke. For the 24/7 crowd, MinnMoms features active discussion forums, as well as recipes, events, advice and of course, cool products (but also recalls).

I’m a little surprised the Strib’s Ballot Challenge didn’t make the cut, nor the great Republican National Convention multimedia coverage by several local sites. (The award period is June 1, 2008 to, oddly, June 30, 2009.)

The Strib has gotten stingy about paying award entry fees in bankruptcy; many writers had to pay out of pocket for Minnesota Page One nominations, for example.

Anyway, the Online Journalism Awards are sponsored by the Online News Association and the University of Miami (Fla.) School of Communications. Winners will be announced Oct. 3 in San Francisco.
