This is an awful story at any time of the year, especially now, but since I wrote in October that former St. Cloud Times and state Capitol reporter Lawrence Schumacher had been fired after child abuse allegations, I should note that Stearns County officials charged him late last week. According to his former paper, Schumacher is accused of malicious punishment of a child and third-degree assault.
Both are felonies, the Times reports.
The case involves a 4-month-old, and in my original piece, Schumacher’s lawyer acknowledged her client’s responsibility. “Larry has not minimized what he has done and is not in denial. He’s in counseling and is taking other proactive measures” to address “poor parenting decisions which resulted in injuries to the one child.”
According to the Times, Schumacher’s court date is Dec. 28.
