Taylor Carik takes over Secrets of the City

Taylor Carik, the tireless entrepreneurial spirit behind Mediation and at least a chunk of BringMeTheNews, now owns Secrets of the City, according to ex-owners Matt Bartel and Kris Henning.

The site — a descendant of the former MnSpeak and The Rake magazine — was the local Internet water cooler before the days of Twitter and Facebook. Within the incestuous digital-media world, Taylor (who once worked for Gannett’s and KARE11’s MetroMix, and won City Pages’ Best Local Blog award a couple of years ago) probably has the most street cred since MnSpeak founder Rex Sorgatz, even if I don’t understand his theories half the time.

Still, the dude is not afraid to walk the talk, and this move makes SOTC well worth watching in the coming days. I’ll try to find out more about what he’s up to and report back.

Looking forward to this. Minnesota’s online news/culture scene has been stagnant this last year or two, and this can only help.

Maybe you think it’s great, but I find it disturbing how few real editors there are in Minneapolis digital media. By “real,” I mean editors who learned the craft of writing and editing. Do you know how many grammar and stylistic errors there are on Secrets of the City? And the editor of l’etoile–a former accountant?
