UnitedHealth contributes $1M to MLK memorial fund

Gen. Colin Powell helped deliver a $1 million check Monday from UnitedHealth Group to planners of a Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington, D.C. The Minnetonka-based HMO has hired Powell to speak at its functions in the past, the Associated Press reports. A foundation is trying to raise $102 million to build the MLK memorial between the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials.

“Sustaining the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. for our children through the creation of this memorial is a cause we are honored to support,” UnitedHealth VP Anthony Welters said in a statement. “The values of equality and social change that Dr. King championed inspire UnitedHealth Group’s commitment each day to advancing social responsibility and diversity in ways that foster a healthy society and a healthy company.”
