UnitedHealth to sell insurance policies that insure individuals against becoming uninsurable

Here’s a headline that sounds straight out of The Onion: UnitedHealth Group will now sell you insurance to insure your ability to buy health insurance in the event you get sick and actually need it, The New York Times reports. The “first of its kind” product is aimed at people worried about losing their employer-sponsored health insurance (and in this economy that probably covers just about everyone). Most health insurers won’t sell coverage to individuals if they believe there’s a high risk of paying for expensive care. Universal access to health insurance is a top priority of President-elect Barack Obama’s health-care agenda, and one policy expert tells the Times that if Obama is successful with his reforms, UnitedHealth’s insurance-insurance would become obselete.
