Best Buy opening smaller, mobile-only stores

Best Buy is going from big-box to boutique, reports the Minyanville investment website.

The Richfield retailer is rolling out a series of “slimmed-down stores — up to 3,000 square feet — exclusively devoted to the sale of wireless equipment.”

The company has opened about 45 Best Buy Mobile locations in the United States and Canada, and the Wall Street Journal says it’s added about 1,000 store-within-a-store mobile centers within its existing locations.

Best Buy said it hopes the move helps it better compete with Wal-Mart and RadioShack, both of which are aggressively selling smartphones and other wireless gear.
