Medtronic‘s spine and biologics unit is locked in a David-vs.-Goliath battle with a smaller San Diego company.

And David appears to be getting some shots in, Finance and Commerce reports.

The San Diego company, NuVasive Inc., tells the newspaper that it believes it is gaining market share from Medtronic, thanks to new spine procedures that it’s introduced recently.

Medtronic has a long and litigious history with NuVasive. The company has hired former Medtronic employees and been the target of a patent infrindgement lawsuit by Medtronic.
