MarketWatch takes a closer look at Best Buy‘s ambitious plan to more than double its share of the mobile phone market in under five years.

At a time when most retailers are retracting, Best Buy is expanding its presence with stand-alone Best Buy Mobile stores, and it’s already seeing a “significant” share increase.

The cell phone business is important because margins on handset devices are usually much higher than those for big-ticket items like TVs and laptops.

Part of what inspired the push into mobile: a survey that said customers prefer going to the dentist to shopping for a cell phone.
