The Pioneer Press’ Tom Webb tracks how recent news events have tossed Spam and its parent company’s stock on a roller coaster ride.

Sales of the inexpensive canned-pork product shot up with the recession, but swine flu headlines prompted some people to hold off on buying pork. Game on again after people learned pork is safe, and Spam became a great food to stockpile for the impending flu pandemic.

Hormel Foods didn’t comment, but Webb reports that the company’s stock price has been revealing.
