Best Buy asks world to help write job description

A Best Buy job description generated quite a bit of buzz last week because of one of the “preferred qualifications” included in it: Applicants should have at least 250 followers on Twitter.

The job is for Senior Manager of Emerging Media Marketing, so it’s reasonable that the winning candidate should be well traveled in social networks like Twitter and Facebook.

Today, the company is taking things a step further with what might be another first: the wiki job description. On his blog this morning, chief marketing officer Barry Judge invited readers to help write the job description using the BestBuyIdeaX site.

“In following the conversation around this job posting we discovered that many people had other ideas for how this job description should look, and what the qualifications should be.  We realized that perhaps we hadn’t thought of everything.

“It seemed to us to be a natural progression to get the community involved in crafting the job description and qualifications. So that’s exactly what we’re going to do.”

It’s not that the company is too lazy to write a description itself, Judge said. It’s a new role and they believe a larger group of people will help come up with more ideas. Not to mention it’s a great marketing gimmick: “Based on the buzz, we also thought, it would be a great way to spread the message that we’re hiring for this role.”
