Target said it may join Wal-Mart in health insurance stance

Target says it may support Wal-Mart‘s call to require large employers to provide health insurance to their workers.

“Conceptually, we can accept an employer mandate,” a spokeswoman tells Bloomberg news service.

Wal-Mart surprised some critics earlier this month when it endorsed the idea that large companies should be required to provide coverage. It’s prompted a rift between the discount-retail giant and the National Retail Federation.

Wal-Mart’s motivations are still a mystery. One theory, from Costco’s CFO: Wal-Mart may believe it’s going to have to offer health insurance to defuse criticism, and that if it has to offer coverage, it may as well drag everyone else with them.
