ATK wins $86M contract to arm Apache helicopters

The Army’s need for more ammunition will bring some federal stimulus to Alliant Techsystems’ Elk River plant.

The Eden Prairie-based weapons maker has been awarded an $86 million contract to provide “lightweight 30mm M789 High Explosive Dual Purpose tactical ammunition” for the military’s Apache attack helicopters.

Production will begin in December at the company’s facilities in Elk River, Radford, Va., and Rocket Center, W.Va. ATK produces more than 8 million rounds of medium-caliber ammunition per year, the company said.
