Another big legal payment in a Medtronic patent dispute, but this one is in the company’s favor.
A U.S. district court jury in San Francisco has ordered AGA Medical to pay $57 million in damages to Medtronic, the company announced. The jury concluded AGA’s Amplatzer Occluder and vascular plug products infringe on Medtronic patents.
AGA will also pay an 11 percent royalty to Medtronic on all U.S. sales of the infringing products through 2018.
I’m guessing that won’t be enough to cancel out the $400 million Medtronic agreed to pay Abbott Labs last week to end an unrelated patent dispute over stent technology.
