Australian newspaper outs Medtronic marketing papers

The Star Tribune’s Inside Track catches a story from the Sydney Morning Herald in Australia about “aggressive” marketing tactics used by Medtronic to sell its medical devices Down Under.

The Morning Herald acquired confidential documents that describe a Medtronic strategy of influencing doctors by awarding “lucrative education grants.” The documents said the grants could be expected to deliver a “potential 200 percent return on investment.”

A company spokeswoman told the Australian newspaper that senior management learned about the program in mid-2007 and shortly thereafter ordered that it be ceased for violating Australian business conduct standards.
