General Mills first-quarter sales increase 1 percent

Fiber One, gluten-free Chex and Multigrain Cheerios were big gainers in General Mill‘s first quarter, with Big G cereal sales up 9 percent.

General Mills — and probably the nation’s waist line — saw even greater growth from the unit that produces Totino’s Pizza Rolls, Pillsbury cookie dough and Pillsbury Toaster Strudels. Pillsbury sales were up 12 percent.

The Golden Valley food giant issued its first-quarter financial results to investors today. The company’s net sales grew 1 percent to $3.5 billion in the 13 weeks ending Aug. 30. That’s after a 14 percent spurt last year.

“We’re very pleased with this start to the year,” CEO Ken Powell said. “We’re seeing continuing strong consumer demand for our products.”
