Alliant Tech wins $49M contract for missile warning system

Alliant Techsystems has been awarded a $49.3 million contract from the U.S. Navy for a missile warning system designed to protect helicopters and other aircraft from surface-to-air missiles.

The announcement comes a day after ATK laid off 550 employees in northern Utah, where the economic impact of the layoffs is expected to be widespread, the Salt Lake Tribune reports.

The Eden Prairie-based company blamed a decrease in federal government spending and the completion of two space and defense programs for the layoffs.

The work associated with the new Navy contract will be performed at the company’s facility in Clearwater, Fla., and is expected to be completed in early 2012.
