Cargill is recalling more than 5,500 pounds of beef tongue because the tonsils might not have been completely removed, the Associated Press reports.
Tonsils can carry the infective agent for Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, or mad cow disease.
Beef tongue and other “slaughterhouse leftovers” have been a growing niche for Cargill, as we noted earlier this year. The company markets the meats to Hispanic shoppers under the Rhumba Meats brand.
The recall comes just a few days after a larger recall for the same reason at an Omaha meat-packing plant owned by J.F. O’Neill Packing Co. The AP reports 33,000 pounds of beef tongue were recalled there.
Food Safety News, a blog by a Seattle law firm that specializes in cases involving food-borne illness, says the back-to-back recalls are curious:
“Two recalls do not a trend make, but it makes you wonder if just maybe the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety & Inspection Service is looking under a few more tongues in recent days.”
