Target settles with woman wrongly accused of counterfeit

Target has settled a lawsuit with a South Carolina woman wrongly accused of trying to pass a counterfeit $100 bill, the Greenville News reports.

The woman, Rita Cantrell, claimed Target defamed her in 2006 when an employee distributed an e-mail to police and other stores characterizing her as a potential shoplifter who tried using a fake bill. She was arrested before authorities determined the bill was not a counterfeit.

A jury awarded Cantrell $3.1 million in damages, which was on appeal to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals when the company and Cantrell announced an undisclosed settlement on Wednesday.
