Southwest Airlines to buy AirTran: Southwest Airlines said today that it plans to buy AirTran for nearly $1.4 billion in cash and stock. Including Orlando-based AirTran Holdings Inc.’s debt and capitalized aircraft operating leases, the transaction is valued at $3.42 billion. Both carriers operate at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport in Terminal 2-Humphrey. Read full story

Macy’s boosts seasonal hiring plan: Macy’s Inc. expects to increase its seasonal hiring to 65,000 associates across the nation this year. That’s slightly higher than last year’s seasonal employment, the company said. The jobs will be mostly part-time positions and many require employees to work evenings, weekends or overnight during the busy holiday season. The positions will be at stores, call centers, distribution centers on fulfillment centers nationwide. The company has six stores in the Twin Cities area, plus two furniture stores. Read full story

Virtual Radiologic Corp. said today it will buy competitor NightHawk Radiology for $170 million: Eden Prairie-based Virtual Radiologic will pay $6.50 per share of NightHawk Radiology Holdings Inc., double what the company’s stock closed at at the end of trading Friday, according to a press release. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2011. Read full story
