Twin Cities get up to $16 million for affordable housing: The Twin Cities will receive a grant up to $16 million to advance the development of effective transit for low-income residents. The Living Cities Integration Initiative will provide the support to preserve and create 400 to 600 units of transit-accessible affordable housing and help about 100 small businesses make it through transit construction, such as the building of the Central Corridor Light Rail Transit line, the St. Paul Foundation announced today. Big G told to pull Chocolate Cheerios promo: An advertising industry self-regulator has told General Mills to stop promoting Chocolate Cheerios after ads that tout the health benefits of original Cheerios. The Council of Better Business Bureaus’ National Advertising Division recommended today that the Golden Valley-based firm discontinue the contested commercials and distance a “lowering cholesterol” claim from Chocolate Cheerios advertising online. Soluble fiber and whole grain oats in original and Honey Nut Cheerios can lower cholesterol and improve heart health, but Chocolate Cheerios does not contain the same soluble oat fiber. Minneapolis named eighth-smartest U.S. city: A new ranking of the smartest U.S. cities has dropped the Twin Cities by four spots to No. 8. The Daily Beast news blog ranked cities by calculating education level and book sales. One-fourth of area residents have a bachelor’s degree, while 12 percent have a graduate degree. Local sales of adult nonfiction books have exceeded 3.27 million so far this year. Minneapolis-St. Paul’s Daily Beast IQ score fell to 138.34 from 159 last year, when the ranking considered voter turnout but not libraries per capita. Boston ranked No. 1 on the list. Read full story
