With the Green Line in operation between downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul, attention now turns to the Twin Cities’ next light rail project: Southwest Light Rail, also called the Green Line extension. The current route proposal spans 16 miles and connects downtown Minneapolis to Eden Prairie, passing through St. Louis Park, Hopkins and Minnetonka. The map below shows the current route with its 16 stations, along with demographic information about nearby U.S. Census tracts: population density, income, people of color and public transit use. 1. Cool graphic — Q on EPrairie’s population of color

Thanks for posting this informative graphic. It looks like Eden Prairie, or a good chunk of it, is 49-66% nonwhite. Am I right to read it this way?

    1. Correct

That’s right, Judy. According to the 2012 ACS 5-year estimates, Census Tract 260.19 in Eden Prairie had a total population of 5,149 and a white population of 2,511, or about 49%. Thus the non-white population of that part of Eden Prairie is about 51% of the total.

  2. Whoa

Hi Alan, if that is not a typo, you may want to check your numbers. Eden Prairie has way more than 5000 people—its probably more like 50,000-60,000.

  3. Woops

Ok, I read more carefully and see you are talking about census tracks–but why if that census track is only 10% of the population?

  4. Obvious

Thank you so much for posting this graphic.
This only makes it that much more obvious that the SW LRT line should be running down Hennepin Ave. and Lake Street rather than through a park.
