Bachmann outraises Romney with $2.2 million first quarter haul

WASHINGTON — An addendum to this morning’s report, about how incumbent members of Congress were trying to raise huge sums of cash in the first quarter of 2011 to project strength, despite the fact that Election Day 2012 is still 20 months away:

Michele Bachmann has raised $2.2 million in the first quarter between her congressional committee, Bachmann for Congress, and her political action committee, MichelePAC. The congressional committee raised $1.7 million, Bachmann Chief of Staff Andy Parrish said, while MichelePAC took in $500,000. Full details of the fundraising and current account balance will be released when her financial paperwork is filed with the Federal Elections Commission later this month.

By way of comparison, Mitt Romney raised $1.9 million in the first quarter for his PAC, though the Romney camp says they’ll start fundraising in earnest later this month. Tim Pawlenty, who like Romney intends to amp up his fundraising efforts in the second quarter, sent out his first presidential mass fundraising e-mail earlier today.

It’s worth noting that every dollar of Bachmann’s congressional account funds could be transferred over to a presidential fund, should she decide to abandon another House bid and run just for the presidency.
