Former Cravaack campaign manager picked to lead South Dakota Republican Party

WASHINGTON — Woodbury native Tony Post will be the next executive director of the South Dakota Republican Party, officials in that state told the Associated Press late Tuesday.

Post has worked for the Minnesota Republican Party, but it was the 2010 election when he really made his name as a campaigner. As campaign manager for Chip Cravaack, Post helmed arguably the biggest upset campaign of the entire election cycle as Cravaack unseated longtime DFL Rep. Jim Oberstar in the 8th District.

There’s no such entrenched Democrat to unseat in South Dakota this election cycle. Republicans control both houses of the state legislature, the governor’s mansion and Republican Kristi Noem unseated Democrat Stephanie Herseth Sandlin last November. The only statewide elected Democrat, Sen. Tim Johnson, isn’t up for reelection until 2014.

Post starts in South Dakota later this month.
