WASHINGTON — The National Republican Congressional Committee is out with its first ad in the heated 8th District race between Republican U.S. Rep. Chip Cravaack and DFLer Rick Nolan.

The ad, which started running in the Twin Cities on Friday, digs up a 30-year-old quotation in which Nolan, then a departing Congressman, said Washington had made him “more liberal and radicalized.” The ad ties Nolan to the Affordable Care Act — he has said he supports the health care reform law, but would favor a single-payer plan.

“Rick Nolan,” the ad says. “Still radical after all these years.”

NRCC spokeswoman Katie Prill said the spot is part of the group’s $1.2 million fall advertising reservation in the Twin Cities, though the NRCC has not released the exact size of the buy.

The ad comes a day after a Democratic group released an ad of its own against Cravaack.

Cravaack upset 18-term Democratic Rep. Jim Oberstar in 2010. Most political prognosticators rate the 8th District race as a toss-up this fall.
