The Strib’s 14-page special section tribute to baseball in the run-up to opening day focuses quite a bit on the new-fangled statistics and new technology a players can use to analyze the mechanics of his most recent swing or the opposing pitcher’s motion. Future hall of famer and uninversally admired slugger Jim Thome doesn’t use any of it. In explaining why not, he provided the best quote I’ve seen so far today:

“My theory on it is, information is nice to have,” Thome said. “Sometimes too much information clogs the brain.”

“How can you think and hit at the same time?”

  2. A second cousin to Ted Williams’ supposedly having said, “If you don’t think too good, don’t think too much.”
