Rick Santorum scored a solid win in Saturday’s Louisiana primary, but the primary schedule for April is full of good states for Mitt Romney, who is back on the inevitability track.
Over the weekend, the Santorum campaign also released a disgraceful 60-second video that, presumably for lack of resources, will not be aired on TV, although Team Santorum says the video is the kickoff to an eight-part series.
The series introduces a tormented little town called “Obamaville,” which shows what will happen to America if President Obama is reelected. Life in Obamaville is not good, not good at all. Children are dying or in danger. Gas prices are so high that men are blowing out their brains, only instead of using a gun they are firing into their heads with gas pumps. Streets are littered with trash and dark birds caw maniacally. Painted floozies are up to something nasty, although it’s not clear what. Iran has the bomb. The economy is tanking. Old people are sad. About half of the cheesy visual tricks of a Grade C horror movie are employed. There are no facts. Santorum does not appear, nor take responsibility for the message.
Maybe it’s supposed to be a joke, but I doubt it. It does seem to be a reference to the Pottersville segments of “It’s A Wonderful Life,” where Jimmy Stewart sees what would become of the adorable town of Bedford Falls if he killed himself.
Politics ain’t beanbag, and it’s dangerous to hearken back to a better past when political opponents could disagree without accusing one another of being hellhounds who want to eat your children. But something has gone off the rails here.
With that intro, here’s the video:
