Congressman Paul Broun, Republican of Georgia’s 10th District, had his 15 minutes of fame in July when a video of him surfaced, speaking to the Liberty Baptist Church Sportsman’s Banquet.

“All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and the Big Bang Theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of Hell,” Broun is heard to say on the video. Broun, who, by the way, serves on the House Science Committee, subscribes in a literal way to the biblical story of the creation of the earth as having occurred over six days less than 9,000 year ago.

Broun was unopposed on the ballot Tuesday, but radio talk show host Neil Boortz had encouraged 10th District voters to vote for 19th century scientist Charles Darwin, father of the theory of evolution, by write-in. The Athens (Ga.) Banner-Herald reports that Darwin apparently received about 4,000 write-in votes. But, the paper notes, Darwin could not have served even if he had outpolled Broun for at least two reasons. One, Darwin did not file the papers necessary to have write-in votes counted for him and two, as described by the paper, Darwin is “long-dead.”

Broun was reelected with 100 percent of the votes that counted.
