On Monday, Feb. 10, MinnPost’s Earth Journal Circle will present its second annual event focusing on substantive discussion of critical issues in the environment.

This year’s topic: the environmental risks and regulatory challenges presented by proposals to mine and process metals from sulfide ores at the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and elsewhere in Minnesota’s boreal forest.

Earth Journal writer Ron Meador will moderate the discussion featuring Rebecca L. Rom of Ely and Scott Strand of St. Paul.

Becky Rom grew up at the edge of the Boundary Waters and has been a lifelong defender of wilderness values there and elsewhere across the U.S. A longtime attorney with Faegre & Benson in Minneapolis, she is a past chair of The Wilderness Society’s governing council and now serves as vice chair of Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness.

Scott Strand is executive director of the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy. Scott served for 17 years in the Minnesota Attorney General’s office, from 1982 to 1999, and was a lawyer at Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi and in his own private practice before taking his present role at MCEA in 2009.

The program will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Hell’s Kitchen in downtown Minneapolis. Registration fee for the program — which includes dinner — is $25 for current MinnPost members and $35 for non-members.

Registration deadline is Feb. 3. Tickets are available here

Dinner includes a choice of five Hell’s Kitchen entrées, plus soft drinks, tax and gratuity. Orders will be taken at 6:00 and dinner will be served at tables during the program.  The program begins at 6:30.
