Two suspects apprehended, one more sought. The Star Tribune’s Karen Zamora and Libor Jany have the latest on the hunt for the men who shot five protesters outside Minneapolis’ 4th police precinct HQ last night: “ Police have arrested two men they have been seeking in connection with a shooting at the Black Lives Matter encampment Monday night. … Minneapolis police said they arrested a 23-year-old suspect in Bloomington at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday. Police are still searching for the other two suspects. … Authorities are weighing whether to treat the shooting of five people protesting near the Minneapolis Police Department’s 4th Precinct Monday night as a hate crime, sources familiar with the investigation said Tuesday morning.”
Minneapolis mayor Betsy Hodges released a short video on Facebook condemning the shooting.
Meanwhile, nothing to see here: The University of Minnesota released a trove of documents relating to the firing of Athletic Director Norwood Teague and the Star Tribune’s Mila Koumpilova and Dan Browning started combing through: “University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler fielded praise and some pointed criticism in the aftermath of former Athletic Director Norwood Teague’s resignation as his staff scrambled to manage the flow of information to the public. … In an e-mail to Kaler, his speechwriter Jay Weiner summarized more than a dozen messages from alumni, donors and community leaders voicing support for Kaler’s handling of the Teague allegations. Many, such as former Minnesota Secretary of State Joan Growe wrote that the president had acted swiftly and decisively.” Glad someone’s willing to share the hard truths with the president.
#grapegate, one year later. In the Los Angeles Review of Books, Jon Wiener reminisces: “The Tuesday before Thanksgiving last year, The New York Times ran a special food section they called ‘The United States of Thanksgiving.’ ‘We’ve scoured the nation for recipes that evoke each of the 50 states,’ they said. ‘These are our picks.’ I’m from Minnesota, and I was sure they would report that the state’s indispensable Thanksgiving dish was wild rice casserole. But instead, for Minnesota they picked ‘Grape Salad’: grapes in sour cream with brown sugar on top, heated under the broiler. I had never heard of it.”
Everything aboveboard with the bidding process for Minnesota Care. Per David Montgomery in the Pioneer Press: “The Minnesota Department of Human Services’s recent competitive bidding of its public health programs could save the state hundreds of millions of dollars, but prompted lawsuits and accusations of unfairness from health plans that came out on the losing end of the bid process. … Now the Office of the Legislative Auditor, in a preliminary review of the program, has concluded DHS followed applicable laws in how it formulated and scored the health plan bids for the state’s MinnesotaCare and Medicaid programs. But the review said changes to state law are needed to address problems that emerged in the bidding process.”
