The Star Tribune’s Karen Zamora reports: “The three finalists to run the massive Minneapolis parks system come from California, Kentucky and North Carolina, but two have roots in the organization they hope to lead. … The three, all men, have park leadership experience and reflect the diversity that Park Board commissioners sought in a candidate from the beginning of the superintendent search.”
A cop in every basement. The Pioneer Press’ Mara H. Gottfried reports: “About 14 hours after Bob Fletcher found out he was elected Ramsey County sheriff, he walked through the front door of a St. Paul restaurant. … ‘Where’s Gidget?,’ he called, looking for the owner of Tin Cup’s on Rice Street. … Over the weekend, Gidget Bailey was talking about closing her restaurant. She said the final straw came Friday, after someone fired a gun in the parking lot and a bullet buzzed by her 27-year-old son’s ear. … But when Fletcher talked to Bailey on Sunday, he asked her, ‘What do you think about putting a (sheriff’s office) substation in your restaurant’s basement?’”
Putting an end to business as usury. MPR’s Martin Moylan reports: “Research indicates that 4 in 10 American adults don’t have the money to pay for a sudden, unexpected expense of just several hundred dollars — like a car repair. … The solution is often a payday loan. That’s an expensive way to borrow money, because annual interest rates can reach several hundred percent. But some organizations are trying to help people avoid payday lenders and borrow money more cheaply.”
