MinnPost launches Twin Cities Theater Calendar

The vibrancy of the Twin Cities theater scene is a rare beast these days: a trope that happens to be completely true. Today, the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area is home to 78 professional theater companies, performing in venues throughout the region — so many, in fact, that it can be hard to keep track of who’s putting on what show in which venue.

That’s why MinnPost has teamed up with The Ivey Awards to bring you our newest site feature: the Twin Cities Theater Calendar. Originally created by Risdall Marketing Group, the calendar offers the most comprehensive, up-to-date way of finding performance times for every professional theater in the metro area. Users can search for productions by the name of the theater company, the title of the production, or the date of the performance.

The calendar also illustrates MinnPost’s continued commitment to covering the Twin Cities arts community. At a time when many media outlets have cut cultural coverage, we’ve expanded ours. Earlier this year, we doubled the frequency of writer Pamela Espeland’s Artscape column, which focuses on local arts institutions, personalities and performances. We also continue to feature Amy Goetzman’s coverage of books and authors; Andy Sturdevant’s weekly take on art, architecture, history and visual culture; and special arts and culture pieces by Jim Walsh, Doug Grow and a host of others.

So check out the calendar, and — if the mood strikes — go see a show. This we know: you’ll have plenty of options.

    One suggestion

This is really cool- thanks to Minnpost and the Ivey Awards for doing this!

I have a suggestion for improvement, however: I think some sort of graphical representation would be more effective. I looked at the calendar and it’s a little cluttered in its current text-only mode. The same show will be listed once for every day it runs. Having a colored and labeled block for each show that indicates the time period it runs on the calendar would be much more user friendly.

In any case, thanks again- I’m sure I’ll be checking this calendar quite often!
