We’re excited to announce the latest addition to our staff. Award-winning journalist Andy Mannix is joining MinnPost as our new data reporter.

Mannix, who grew up mostly in the Detroit area and Stillwater, began his journalism career as a reporter and editor at the Minnesota Daily, the University of Minnesota’s student-run newspaper, where he wrote in-depth pieces on everything from a video piracy ring to the real-estate empire connected to the University’s wrestling program.

After his time at the U, Mannix worked for four years as a staff writer for City Pages, covering the criminal justice system, politics and LGBT rights. Among the stories he produced for CP was a series exposing the prolonged warehousing of offenders with mental illnesses in Minnesota’s county jails; the story exposed issues that eventually spurred lawmakers to change several laws around inmate care. His profile of gay marriage activist and then-Vikings punter Chris Kluwe won the 2013 GLAAD award for “Outstanding Newspaper Article.”

Mannix has also written for TIME and The Seattle Times, and is currently finishing his master’s degree from the University of California-Berkeley journalism’s school, where he studied investigative and data reporting.

At MinnPost, Mannix will focus on public policy reporting and analysis informed by the ever-growing mass of publicly available data. He’ll be joining MinnPost at the beginning of June.
