About 120 people joined MinnPost Wednesday night at The Happy Gnome in St. Paul to discuss the upcoming Minnesota legislative session with MinnPost writers Briana Bierschbach and Doug Grow.

Executive Editor Andrew Putz moderated the 90-minute discussion, which touched on a wide range of topics, including Minnesota’s caucus system, transportation funding, and whether the Legislature will finally pass Sunday liquor sales (short answer: probably not).

Perhaps the biggest theme of the evening was how the 2016 election will impact the House and Senate. Though there are no statewide offices up for election this fall, all 201 seats in the Legislature will be on the ballot — a fact that will play out in ways big and small over the course of the session, said Bierschbach, who leads MinnPost’s coverage of state politics.

The conversation was a part of the MinnPost Social event series, sponsored by RBC Wealth Management, in which our journalists share their insights with the public in a casual atmosphere. The events are free for MinnPost members, $10 for nonmembers.

The next MinnPost Social, which will feature Bierschbach and Grow recapping the state legislative session, will take place in late May.

  1. Legislative recap in May

While the Happy Gnome is a great bar and the space last night was very good for the preview, it is not handicapped accessible. I have a friend who would really like to attend the recap in May. However, she would not be able to participate because there is no elevator and she can’t climb stairs. You really need to think about that when planning these events.

Thanks for the great information last night.

  2. I’m sorry I missed it!

Looking forward to a May recap. Thanks for providing these opportunities!
