What’s so special about Minnesota?

During our summer fundraiser, we’re reflecting on what’s special about Minnesota: access to news.

Associate Editor Greta Kaul: “I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of being able to toss the canoe on top of the car, drive a few miles and paddle the surprisingly serene Mississippi after work.”

Like many Minnesotans, I moved away for a while after college, then came back.

My stint in San Francisco was really fun, but it was expensive and crowded. I loved San Antonio’s history and great food, but it was too hot.

This is my seventh summer back home, and I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of being able to toss the canoe on top of the car, drive a few miles and paddle the surprisingly serene Mississippi after work. Likewise, I love how our short growing season makes every hour spent in the garden feel ephemeral.

There’s another thing that’s special about Minnesota: access to news. We have more healthy news outlets here than cities and states much bigger than us.

That’s no accident. Minnesotans are uncommonly engaged in what’s going on around them: reading, subscribing to and supporting places like MinnPost.
