Ecolab buys surgical products maker O.R. Solutions for $260 million

Ecolab Inc. said Friday it will purchase O.R. Solutions Inc. for $260 million in cash.

Ecolab, based in St. Paul, says the deal will immediately boost its profits in 2011. O.R. Solutions generates about $55 million in annual sales.

“We believe this will be a terrific complement to our global health-care business,” CEO Douglas Baker said in a statement. “O.R. Solutions has enjoyed strong growth and has significant upside potential in both the U.S. and international markets. The acquisition will strengthen our position in infection prevention, build on our surgical barrier platform, and expand our solutions for the operating room.”

O.R. Solutions makes custom-fit sterile drapes that maintain fluid temperatures during surgery.

In September, 3M Cos. said it would pay $810 million to purchase Arizant Inc. in Eden Prairie, a maker of products, including blankets, that help keep patients warm in hospitals.
