Two Minnesotans surprised with prestigious teaching award

During what they thought was a routine assembly, Minnesota teachers Kelly Woods of Nellie Stone Johnson Community School in Minneapolis and Tracey Cross of Galtier Magnet Elementary School in St. Paul were surprised with a $25,000 cash award.

The Milken Family Foundation Awards were started in 1987 to recognize outstanding teachers for their work in raising student achievement. The two unsuspecting teachers were two of only around 80 educators across the country to receive the award this year. Also, on hand to congratulate the winners were state Education Commissioner Alice Seagren and Minnesota First Lady Mary Pawlenty.
